Victorian Standard Number Plates: Sizes, Fitment & Bracket Guide

Standard is the plate most Victorian cars actually wear — and the one most people never think about until it doesn't sit flush. Here's every dimension, mounting quirk and fitment fix you need.

What Counts as a "Standard" Plate in Victoria

Standard (general issue) plates are what VicRoads hands out by default on new registrations — no application, no waitlist, no premium. They're the baseline every other style (slimline, euro, JDM) gets compared against.

Current-issue VIC standard plates run 372mm (w) x 132mm (h) — the full-size Australian format. Older general-issue plates from past series can vary slightly in character spacing but hold the same outer dimensions.

Standard vs Slimline vs Euro — The Actual Difference

  • Standard: 372mm x 132mm — full height, factory default
  • Slimline: 372mm x 100mm — same width, ~25% shorter, sits closer to the plate recess on newer bumpers
  • Euro style: 520mm x 110mm — wider format built for European makes with elongated plate housings

If your car's plinth or recess looks too deep or too tall for the plate sitting in it, you're not imagining it — standard plates were sized for cars from decades ago, and a lot of modern bumper housings assume a slimmer profile.

Why Standard Plates Rattle or Sit Proud

The most common complaint we get on standard plates isn't the plate — it's the mount. Factory plastic clips and OEM plinths are built to a tolerance, not a fit, which is why:

  • Plates sit slightly proud of the bumper line
  • Edges catch wind at speed and vibrate
  • Boot-slam or tailgate-close smacks the plate against the paint

None of that is a plate problem. It's a bracket problem.

Mounting a Standard Plate Without Drilling

A CNC bracket re-aligns the plate to your car's factory hole pattern instead of the OEM clip housing — no new holes, no drilling into the bumper or the plate itself. For standard-size plates this means:

  • The plate sits flush against the panel instead of floating on a plastic clip
  • No more rattle against paint on boot close
  • Clean, factory-style finish instead of the stock plinth look

Which FLX Bracket Fits VIC Standard

Our Standard bracket is built to the 372mm x 132mm format specifically — same multi-fit hole pattern as our other VIC brackets, so it drops onto existing factory mounting points.

If you're not sure which size you're holding, our measurement guide walks through it in under a minute — measure once, order once.
