Ordering a bracket, frame or surround for the wrong plate size is the single most common fitment mistake we see. Australian plates aren't one-size-fits-all — dimensions shift between states, between plate styles, and even between the front and rear of the same car. This guide lists the actual measurements, state by state, so you can identify your plate in under a minute.

One rule before anything else: always measure your physical plate. Widths and heights below reflect current manufacturer specifications, but older issues, reissues and auction plates can vary by a few millimetres. Width first, then height, in millimetres — that's the convention used across the industry and throughout this guide.

Standard Number Plate Size in Australia

The standard Australian number plate measures 372mm wide × 134mm high. That applies to regular-issue plates in NSW, QLD, SA, WA and Tasmania.

Victoria is the exception worth knowing about: current VIC standard-issue plates typically measure 372mm × 132mm — a couple of millimetres shorter in height than the national norm. Most standard-size mounts accommodate the 132–134mm range, but if you're between products, this is exactly why measuring beats assuming.

Slimline Number Plate Sizes

Slimline plates keep the full 372mm width (on six-character combinations) but drop the height for a lower-profile look. This is where sizing gets more detailed, because slimline height changes with character count and, in some states, between the front and rear plate.

Note the pattern in NSW, SA and the ACT: the front and rear plates on the same vehicle are different heights. If you're ordering mounts for both ends of the car, check both plates — they are frequently not the same size.

Euro Number Plate Sizes

European-style plates are the widest format on Australian roads. The full euro plate measures 520mm × 110mm — the same footprint across every state that issues them, which is why euro brackets are typically listed as all-states fitment. New Zealand's equivalent runs marginally taller at 520 × 112mm.

JDM-style plates replicate the squarer Japanese format and have become a staple of the import scene:

The near-square JDM aspect ratio means standard-plate hardware almost never lines up — factory bumper recesses in Australian-delivered cars are cut for the 372mm-wide format, not 330mm. Purpose-sized mounting is close to mandatory here.

How to Measure Your Number Plate

Thirty seconds with a tape measure removes all guesswork:

1. Measure the width — left edge to right edge of the plate itself (not any existing frame or surround).
2. Measure the height — bottom edge to top edge.
3. Note the character count — it matters for slimline and heritage sizing.
4. If you're mounting front and rear, measure both plates — in several states they differ.
